Aqueous Humour information
The Aqueous Humour
of the eye is a small cavity between the cornea and the lens, and is filled with a fluid composed mostly of amino acids.
Some people confuse it with the vitreous humour, a similar sounding part but not at all the same thing. The purpose of the aqueous humor is to regulate the pressure that comes from the inside of the eye, or the intraocular pressure.
What this does is basically inflate the eye so that it maintains its round shape. Without the aqueous humour the eye would become either under inflated or inflate way too much.
Another role of the aqueous humour in the eye is to provide other parts with nutrients. As mentioned previously, it's filled with healthful amino acids, and so it can act as a reservoir for the other areas of the eye, namely the lens, Cornea, and anterior vitreous.
Additionally, scientists believe that it is one of the eye's first defenses against pathogens, due to the large amount of immunoglobulins.
One of the disorders that can affect the aqueous humor is called Glaucoma, which is a disorder that damages the main optic nerve and can eventually lead to total blindness if not treated by a qualified medical professional. To Protect Your Eyesight so that you don't go blind later in life, you need to watch your diet to ensure that your body and organs are getting all of the nutrients they need.
There are essentially two types of glaucoma: there is Open Angle Glaucoma and Closed Angle Glaucoma.
Also known as chronic glaucoma, open angle glaucoma occurs gradually over time and some people don't even realize that their vision is getting worse until the disease has reached a significant stage of development. Closed angle glaucoma happens literally overnight and can cause a lot of pain to the person. As the effects are more noticeable from the outset, closed angle glaucoma is much easier to diagnose and treat, although it's often much more frightening than the other type.
Both forms of glaucoma begin in the aqueous humor.
In the United States it is estimated that glaucoma affects approximately one person out of every 200, and the problem is that most people are unaware that they have the condition until it is too late.
It's important to get periodic checkups with your Eye Care Specialist or
Eye Care Professional to determine if you have glaucoma.
This is especially relevant because 90 percent of the cases of glaucoma are the open angle variety, meaning that it sneaks up slowly and takes a firm hold before drastic changes in vision are noticed. Once this vision is taken by glaucoma, no amount of Eye Surgery can bring it back.
One of the main causes of glaucoma is ocular hypertension in the aqueous humour, which is an increased pressure that damages nerve endings. African Americans are actually three times more likely to get glaucoma as well, but no matter what race you are it is always important to receive at least yearly checkups with your family eye doctor.
Remember nothing beats a healthy diet with the right balance of Vitamins and Minerals when it comes to preventing an Eyesight Problem.
