Double Vision Information

As humans, vision is one of our most used senses, so when something goes wrong with it, for example when we wake up one morning and have Diplopia, it can be very frightening.

If you do find that you have Diplopia for no apparent reason, you should always try to set up an appointment with your Eye Care Specialist or Eye Care Professional as soon as possible.

To understand what causes double vision, you first have to understand how the eye works. It's an intricate system of hundreds of thousands of different processes that all take place simultaneously, similar to a large machine with multiple cogs and levers.

If just one part is not functioning correctly, the end result is not what is expected. Again, this can be extremely frightening, especially when you've spent years getting the same results out of that machine.

Simply put, this is the way the Visual Process works. First, light comes in through the cornea, which is the clear membrane on the very outside of the eye.

This will focus the light so that the pupil can process it and transmit data back to The Retina, which is the part of the eye that differentiates between light and dark and sends the image information via a series of chemicals and impulses up the optic nerve and into the visual cortex of the brain.

The muscles in the eye are called the extraocular muscles and they are what allow it to rotate in its socket. If any one of these facets is experiencing a malfunction, no matter how small, the result is a change in vision.

This change can be anything from double vision to Blurry Vision to halos of light around objects, and all are visual cues that the eyes aren't processing images the way they should.

Double vision is most commonly caused by problems in the Cornea. When this happens, the result is usually that only one eye is experiencing the double vision; if you cover that eye up, the extra image goes away and you can see normally again.

Sometimes Laser Eye Surgery will shift one cornea a bit, causing this eye condition which can be permanent, depending on how fast it is addressed.

If this is a result of the lens of the eye then the issue is most likely a condition called cataracts. Cataracts cause a white film to go over the eyes and can lead to many Eyesight Problems, and eventually blindness. Fortunately, cataracts can be easily fixed with minor surgery if they are not too well developed.

Unfortunately, this eye condition can also be caused by brain problems, and the only way to determine exactly what the cause of this is is to go and see a licensed Eye Care Specialist or Eye Care Professional.

If the problem is not in the eye he will probably recommend you to a specialized doctor that deals in neuroscience to look at the problem and find out what can be done about it.
