if you have Poor Night Vision you will have difficulty picking out objects and recognizing people at night.

Night vision is your ability to see well in low light situations.

One of the biggest reasons that humans need good night vision is for night driving. Compared to most other animals, humans have extremely bad night vision. Millions of Americans actually have lower than average night vision, and this is often an early sign of Cataracts. Progressive cataracts are like veils that slowly cover the eyes, preventing true vision.

You can Improve Night Vision by taking Eye Supplements like beta carotene and zinc, both proven to be effective at increasing night vision and reversing signs of night blindness.

There are several different factors that can cause poor night vision – some are treatable while others can only be slowed down. It's always good to talk to your Eye Care Professional or Eye Care Specialist if you notice a sudden decrease in night vision, or any other Vision Problems for that matter.

Some of the causes of poor night vision are:

  • Cataracts – The eye's lens is situated directly behind the pupil. As you may know, every cell in our bodies dies and is regenerated, hundreds of thousands of times throughout our lifetimes. As we age, the process becomes less efficient, and when this happens inside the lens there's a buildup of waste and debris that creates a cataract. Cataracts occur gradually, over time, and slowly cloud the eye. A person with a fully developed Cataract will have a visible white fog over his pupil.
  • The first thing you'll notice with cataracts is a decrease in your effective night vision. As light filters through a lens with a cataract, instead of passing straight through it's distorted, much the same way light will refract and diffuse when going through a glass of cloudy water. This can create halos around lights, which is mostly seen at night. General Blurry Vision is also seen a lot by people with cataracts.

  • Zinc deficiency – Zinc and vitamin A are like the dynamic duo, protecting the eyes from all invaders. Vitamin A is completely necessary for the eyes, but without the presence of zinc the tissues will not be able to absorb it as efficiently. You can get zinc in vitamins as well as beans, nuts, poultry, and beef.
  • Vitamin A – The second half of the zinc team, vitamin A is vital for nearly every process in the eye, especially The Retina. Poor night vision in the US doesn't often result from vitamin A deficiency, although countries in other parts of the world have a higher prevalence. Intestinal problems will often lead to a deficiency, but otherwise it is very well absorbed, especially in the presence of zinc. Crohn's disease can also cause a vitamin A deficiency. Vitamin A is abundant in carrots and leafy Vegetables for Eye Health like lettuce and kale.

Remember nothing beats a healthy diet with the right balance of Vitamins and Minerals when it comes to preventing an Eyesight Problem.

Night vision is not always serious, although any eye issues that crop up suddenly should result in an immediate phone call to your friendly neighborhood eye doctor.
