Regular Astigmatism is the most common eye condition many adults and young children experience.

To give you an idea about how frequent Astigmatism is, about 1 in 6 American adults have this condition.

Astigmatism In Children, a study showed that 3 in 10 children between the ages of 5 to 17 had already developed astigmatism.

Many adults are also born with it, but are not aware till later in life when their condition starts to cause them serious and painful symptoms like headaches, therefor it is hard to say how many are actually born with it vs how many developed it at an young age.

What is Astigmatism? There are many factors to consider as to why people develop astigmatism and why other do not, which makes it very difficult to simply pin-point the reason.

It is speculated that it is simply due to genetics and that if both parents have an Eye Astigmatism it is more likely that their children will too. Adults could have simply acquired it because of poor health or the human body just simply decided it was time to. Any severe eye injuries and infections can also lead to astigmatism.

To best Protect Your Eyesight, it is recommended that you should eat Foods For Eye Health that contain huge amounts of vitamin A.

You can either obtain this by supplements or by eating liver, carrots, broccoli, spinach and other foods rich with vitamin A. Taking magnesium supplements also helps improve vision. Taking a digestive enzymes increases the absorption of many minerals such as vitamin a, zinc and copper.

There are other supplements that help with your vision and eyes in general that you might want to look into. These supplements are called Retinal, Selenium, Bilberry, and Taurine.

Nothing beats a healthy diet with the right balance of Vitamins and Minerals when it comes to preventing an Eyesight Problem.

Those who have regular astigmatism are able to wear glasses, contacts, and can even undergo in Laser-Eye-Surgery.

People who have Irregular Astigmatism can only use Contact Lenses or go through surgery based on their type of condition.

There are three types of Toric Lenses for Astigmatism that can be used.

  • Soft contact lenses are the most popular. There are made out of hydrogel, which is a combination of water and polymer. These materials help oxygen move through the contact lens, which means the eye can wear it for a longer period of time.
  • Gas permeable contact lenses. These are made out of only polymer. As polymers are made out of plastic, you can not wear them for prolong periods of time. These polymers for this particular lens are permeable, which means that they still allow oxygen through the eye and blood vessels will not appear due to the lack of oxygen.
  • Rigid contact lenses. These are older contact lenses and are typically not sold anymore. Probably lenses either your great grandfather, grandfather, or even father (depending how old you are) used to wear. They are typically made out of glass and plastic. These contact lenses were more likely to have blood vessels appear in the eye due to the extreme lack of oxygen they provided.
