Vision Disorders can be varied and caused by a number of different factors, and some of them may not even be directly related to your eyes.

There's a complex system at work inside your head that brings you vision, and it involves dozens of parts of the eye itself; the Optic Nerve, which is the cluster of nerves that deliver the light signals received by your eyes to the visual cortex of the brain; and the brain itself, which is responsible for interpreting those signals and “showing” you the picture that results.

To Protect Your Eyesight, you should schedule checkups with an Eye Care Professional or Eye Care Specialist at least once a year, eat a healthy diet full of leafy greens and colored Vegetables for Eye Health (highly concentrated sources of vitamin A and beta carotene), and possibly even take Vitamin A and Vitamin E Eye Supplements if you feel like your diet is lacking in either of those critical nutrients.

At the first sign of any of the following vision disorders, schedule an appointment with your Eye Care Professional or Eye Care Specialist.

As there are so many factors in vision, the issue may be serious.

  • Astigmatism – This is an issue with the shape of the eye that can be corrected with Lasik Surgery. Rather than being round, the Cornea is shaped more like a football, making it difficult for your eye to focus on one direct point, which often results in Double Vision or Blurry Vision. It's often seen along with Hyperopia, Myopia, and Presbyopia. Sometimes Astigmatism will only affect the range of your vision, and as such it is commonly misdiagnosed as Nearsighted Vision or far sightedness.
  • Dry Eyes – As you may be able to guess, dry eye syndrome is a condition caused when the eye does not produce enough tears to effectively lubricate the front of the eye. Every time you blink, your tear ducts deliver a saline solution to the front of the eye to protect the cells in your Cornea and lens. If your body isn't producing enough tears, the surface will become dry and start to deteriorate, causing redness, swelling, itchiness, and possible long term damage. If anything, it just doesn't look that good. Try some Dry Eye Care
  • Amblyopia – You may not recognize the official name for this, but you're probably familiar with the effect. This is also known as Lazy Eye syndrome” and is caused when the non dominant eye has an impaired ability to focus and drifts off center. Every human inherently has a dominant eye and a non dominant one. If the two images are slightly skewed, the brain selects the best image from the two and uses that. The eye that produces the weaker image gradually continues to get weaker since the brain no longer uses its input as much as that from the dominant eye.

It usually occurs in children but can crop up at any time in life. It's actually the most prevalent of the vision disorders that affect people who are less than 45 years of age.
