Some things that people thought were Macular degeneration treatment breakthroughs in the past have changed.
In the past, Thalidomide was actually a candidate for treating Macular Degeneration, along with the drug interferon and red wine.
Gone the same way as the dodo bird, thalidomide, interferon, and red wine.
These are all examples of treatments that have been debunked through careful testing.
Since Thalidomide and Interferon inhibit blood vessel growth in the body, researchers thought that they could prevent the abnormal vessels of wet AMD.
It turns out that Thalidomide has intolerable, though not dangerous, side effects in adults.
Interferon was proven to be ineffective a few years earlier by a similar study.
Preliminary studies of red wine also found no positive impact, although it was certainly a more palatable treatment that either drug.
As research continues, more experimental treatments will also go the way of the dodo bird, but others will remain to help us retain or restore our vision.
If you do make sure you inquire about the reputation of the physician conducting the study and the organization funding it.
Some Macular Degeneration Treatment Breakthroughs and New Discoveries on the horizon.
An answer for dry AMD:
Drusen are the small yellowish spots in the macula that are the early signs of Maculare Degeneration.
Some Researchers argue that dresen are signposts: they tell us that the eye is experiencing Macular Degeneration.
Lasering them may just remove the signposts without slowing down the condition.
An answer for occult pattern wet AMD:
Transpupillarey Thermotherapy (TTT) is our best hope so far for treating occult pattern wet Macular Degeneration with a laser.
TTT uses a very low-heat beam over a relatively long period of time – a full sixty seconds – much longer that the short zaps of traditional laser treatments.
Cleaning up the old neighborhood
Before PDT, ophthalmologists couldn’t treat wet Macular Degeneration with laser if the abnormal blood vessels grew underneath the fovea, the center of the Macula, because the heat from the laser would damage the tissue and cause a prominent blind spot.
