The Optic Nerve
is the part of the eye that sends information from The Retina
and transmits it to the brain, where it is processed as visual imagery.
Technically, these nerves are a facet of the central nervous system, the “information passageway” of the body. Essentially, it's just a cluster of nerves that extend from the back of the eye.
These nerves receive their information from the Retina, a clear film-like membrane that sits in the rear of the eye. The retina contains light sensitive cones and rods that process photons, or particles of light.
If the eye was compared to a camera, the retina would be the film, the brain would be the television screen, and the optic nerve would be the cable that connects the two. It is one of the most integral parts of the eye and needs to be taken care of to prevent premature blindness or even Macular Degeneration.
So how do you take care of something that's at the back of your eye?
You definitely can't get at it from the outside, but what you can do is make sure you eat a diet that is high in the Vitamins and Minerals that an eye needs to function properly. To Protect Your Eyesight well into old age, the first thing you need to provide it is vitamin A.
Carrots are high in beta-carotene, a form of pro-vitamin A, and in fact provide one of the highest concentrations of the vitamin. We've all heard people say to eat more carrots for your eyes, but the truth is it actually does provide the proper nutrients, and can even help Improve Night Vision.
Egg yolks are also high in vitamin A as well as Lecithin, another nutrient that plays a role in dozens of bodily functions. Many people try to stay away from egg yolks because of the cholesterol content, but one or two servings a week will have many times more benefits than disadvantages. Omega-3 is a long chain fatty acid that promotes plenty of beneficial effects in the body and brain. The properties of Omega-3 extend much farther than the brain though; it can be used to reduce inflammation in patients with optic neuritis, a disease of the optic nerve.
Vitamin A and Omega-3 are two of the most helpful nutrients for your eyes, but a diet rich in zinc, selenium, vitamin C, and vitamin E can greatly reduce the symptoms of many eye conditions, and they can even prevent them altogether.
The human eye is an extremely sensitive organ and needs to be treated with respect. This involves feeding it the proper foods. When your optic nerve is well fueled the other parts of your eye will be able to function at a much higher level, increasing your vision and protecting your eyes from all sorts of diseases like Glaucoma and optic neuritis.
These nutrients can even help when the Eyesight Problem is a secondary symptom as in multiple sclerosis.
