Many adults and children alike suffer from astigmatism, since this condition is so common Treating Astigmatism is often as easy as just picking up a pair of glasses or going through eye surgery.

There are two common astigmatism conditions that exist, there is Regular Astigmatism and Irregular Astigmatism.

It will greatly depend which condition you have as to what treatment you can use. Those who have irregular will not be able to use Prescription Glasses due to the extent of their condition. There are many options available however and this should not be considered a set back.

In some cases, if the degree of Astigmatism is very low and if there are no signs of Myopia (shortsightedness), then treating astigmatism is deemed unnecessary.

In fact, this sort of mild astigmatism is quite normal among many young children. It has been found that Astigmatism In Children is very common.

The Cornea will eventually change shape and become 'normal' as the children grows. This is not to say that all children will be cured of astigmatism when they are fully grown.

When treating astigmatism, your Eye Care Specialist or Eye Care Professional needs to know if there are any other eye conditions or Eyesight Problems present as well.

Certain eye conditions can be seen along with Eye Astigmatism so there is a chance you might have more than one condition to think of.

People who have corneal dystrophy (people who have a hazy corneal) or Cataracts (a hazy lens) are more likely to develop astigmatism. This is because, due to the haziness, light is not able to enter the eyes as evenly as a normal eye.

There are also other serious eye conditions like keratoconus, optic nerve hypoplasia, retinitis pigmentosa, albinism, and even nystagmus that can also be associated with astigmatism.

There are three types of treatment to consider.

  • Eye glasses. For those who process regular astigmatism, Prescription Glasses might be the best option, especially for those who do not like Contacts.
  • Contact Lenses are also a valid choice for people with both types of astigmatism. Many people believe that only Gas Permeable Contact Lenses can cure their astigmatism. This was true a few years ago, however technology has improved quite greatly and you are now able to get the Toric Lenses for Astigmatism to help correct astigmatism. The gas permeable lens is made out of polymers. These polymers are permeable which is what makes the plastic breathable for the eyes. Since they are made out of plastic, one of the main benefits to using these lenses over the toric lens is because they can hold to its original shape when you blink. This means that you are able to see clearer than the softer lenses.
  • A Toric Lens is a great way to Protect Your Eyesight. These typically contain a mixture of water and polymer along with hydrogel. This makes the contact lens very breathable for the eye. The water is what makes them so much more comfortable than traditional lenses. They usually have two optical powers in them, one for the astigmatism and the other for either Myopia also known as nearsightedness or short sightedness or Hyperopia also known as farsightedness or long sightedness depending on the patient.
