Optic Nerve Hypoplasia Information
Optic Nerve Hypoplasia is a condition where the optic nerve is underdeveloped.
It can occur with either one or both of the optic nerves. The optic nerve's purpose is to project anything that the Retina sees to the brain for analysis.
In a healthy optic nerve there is over 1 million nerve fibers, but with those who have been diagnosed with this condition there are a lot less of these nerve fibers. The number of nerve fibers will differ depending on the person and how underdeveloped their optic nerve is.
Hypoplasia is related to several systemic problems from the brain and central nervous system. Children with Hypoplasia are at a big risk. They could have development delays along with hormonal deficiencies.
Genetic reasons have not been found in most Optic Nerve cases. It is capable of affecting people of all races, but evidence shows that the presence of Hypoplasia in Asians is far less.
Children with this typically have an abnormal brain structure. It can also affect its function. This can have a huge impact to a child's development or it can sometimes be extremely minor to the point where it will not affect them.
If it does affect the child's development then they will start to experience difficulty in sensory integration, motor functions, academic skills, intelligence skills, affects on speech and language, and social skills.
Children will smaller brains will sometimes start to experience cysts, sacks filled with fluid, inside their brains. These will have to be drained from time to time to reduce any complications. An surgical device labeled as a shunt is implanted in order to do this.
Just because a child's brain is smaller than the average brain does not necessary mean that they are incapable of intelligent thought. In fact, it can range greatly from retardation to extremely high intelligence capabilities.
Children who have Hypoplasia can be utterly blind to having prefect eyesight. The reasons for this are not necessarily fully understood. Children might start to develop a condition called Nystagmus, which causes eye movements that they are unable to control. People who have Hypoplasia might become extremely sensitive to sounds, scents, and even textures.
Adults and children who have been diagnosed contain a large pain tolerance level. This is problematic because they could end up causes damage to themselves without knowing it.
If they are not properly observed they could get seriously injured and not be concerned by a very life-treating wound. Behaviors such as body rocking, head banging, biting, hand flapping, and even hitting parts of the body are common among people who are diagnosed with optic nerve Hypoplasia. These are quite similar traits to those who have autism.
Children will show that they are capable of skills that are only unique to them. It is quite common for children to communicate through music as speech is greatly compromised.
Children have proven that they are capable of playing musical instruments without trouble and some are capable of multiplying large numbers in their head even though they seem slightly retarded in nature.
