A Chalazion is a cyst that appears on the eyelid. This is typically caused by an inflammation due to a blockage of an oil gland at the base of the eyelash.

This can become extremely inflamed and it usually appears to look like they are inside the eyelid as oppose to the base of the eyelash. It is known to affect the upper eyelid more so than the bottom one.

There is confusion between what a chalazion vs a stye (hordeola) is.

A Sty is an Eye Infection that becomes fragile and sometimes painful to touch. It is a red lump that lies on the margin of the eyelid as oppose to inside like a cyst is.

However, it is known that hordeolas occur inside the eyelid at times as well. When this happens, it is called internal hordeolum. A cyst is merely a bump in the eyelid. They typically look similar to a stye, but they do not hurt and are a lot larger in size.

When a Sty appears it means that there is a bacterial infection at the root of the eyelash. When an internal hordeolum occurs it means that the oil glands inside the eyelid is inflamed.

If this internal hordeolum can not heal or drain, a cyst starts to form. Typically when eye doctors diagnoses whether you have a sty or chalazion, it greatly depends if the bump is hard or not. If it is hard, then the doctor will tell you it is a cyst.

Common symptoms of a stye are:

  • This Eyelid Problem becomes more painful and swollen when it starts to grow.
  • Appears to be a pimple along the edge of the eyelid.
  • Eyes or eye may begin to water uncontrollably.
  • Styes swell for about three days before they burst open and discharge liquid.
  • If everything goes well, a stye can heal within a week.

Common symptoms of a chalazion are:

  • Firm lump underneath the eyelid.
  • Eyelid tenderness
  • They grow slower than their counterpart.
  • If they become large enough, the patient will not be able to see clearly.
  • Sensitivity to light.
  • A heavy sensation around the eyelid.
  • Inflammation and swelling has a wider spared than their counterpart.
  • Typically heals after a few months.

If this goes untreated it can start to lead to Astigmatism because it puts heavy pressure on the Cornea.

Other complications occur when a person has undergone any form of Laser Eye Surgery. With the laser shaping parts of the Cornea and burning parts of it away, it greatly weakens the eye's defenses and small chalazia can form.

If you experience recurring chalazia in the same area, it could mean that a type of cancer is starting to form. It is extremely important to talk to your your Eye Care Professional or Eye Care Specialist and let him know that it has been occurring in the same place. He may be able to help Protect Your Eyesight before the cancer becomes serious.

This condition can go away on its own, but it may take several months to do so. It is highly recommended that you talk to your eye professional and see what is the best option for you given your condition.
