One of the biggest names in the field of ophthalmology is Marshall Miller Parks.

He was widely considered to be the father of pediatric ophthalmology, which deals specifically with diseases that affect the eyes of children, as well as child visual development and healthcare. Parks was born in Michigan in 1918, and he attended St. Louis University School of Medicine where he obtained his degree.

After that, Parks entered the United States Navy during World War II, serving as a medical officer. When he left the Navy, he began to study pediatric ophthalmology under the guidance of his mentor, Frank D. Costenbader, who was the very first pediatric ophthalmologist. The two worked together at the Children's Hospital in Washington to create the first ophthalmic fellowship training program.

Marshall Miller Parks was concerned by the fact that there were no sub-specialities that specifically catered to the needs of small children with vision problems and sought to fix it. To this end, he expanded the Children's National Medical Center's pediatric ophthalmology program.

He also trained others in the sub-speciality and went on to become the first president of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology. Many of the members of this association had learned a great deal from the fellowship training program.

He was eventually inducted as a Knight of Malta, and his associates considered him to be one of the top 10 influential ophthalmologists of the millennium. Marshall Miller Parks finally passed away on July 25, 2005, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most famous people in the whole field of Childrens Eye Care and greatly influencing the future of ophthalmology with his accomplishments.

Ophthalmology is a steadily advancing field of medicine and surgery dealing with the condition of the eye and the quality of a person's vision. It's important to Protect Your Eyesight, and as technology continues to improve, it becomes easier and easier to keep your eyes healthy and your vision clear.

Surgeons have been developing newer, better methods of operating on the eye since long before the modern age, contrary to what some might think — what we're able to do today is merely built off of these old methods.

But still, there are a number of modern ophthalmologists who have greatly contributed to the study of the eye and who have developed safer, less painful methods of operating on the eye.

Our eyes are, of course, very fragile. Some might even say it seems counterintuitive have them out in the open the way they are, protected only by thin flaps of skin. They are fine, delicate little pieces of machinery and every cog needs to be in place for the sake of optimal eyesight.

This vulnerability is exactly why ophthalmologists must take great care, and why their successes are worthy of the utmost praise and recognition. The best individuals in the field have taken this sensitive part of the body and developed ways to modify and reshape it without causing the patient any unnecessary pain.

Many would say that this is nothing short of extraordinary.
