The Thomas Pryor Gore Story

the late Democratic politician, Thomas Pryor Gore was one incredible person who managed to pursue his goals in the face of blindness.

Born in Webster County, Mississippi, Thomas dreamed of becoming a senator one day. However, when he was a child he experienced two separate accidents that ended up taking his vision. But even with eyes that couldn't see, he refused to give up on his goal in life.

He was elected as one of the first two senators of the state of Oklahoma in 1907, and his blindness never caused him much grief during his career. However, he did have to deal with his colleagues trying to take advantage of his condition and trick him into signing various documents. He earned the nickname “the Blind Cowboy” due to his tendency to trick them into doing the very same thing.

Thomas Pryor Gore made a name for himself along with the multitude of other famous blind people such as Helen Keller who made large contributions to society, proving that blindness doesn't have to hinder a person from doing the things they want.

There are a number of famous blind people who have managed to make a name for themselves throughout history, even in this world where handicapped people are often treated as inferior because they are unable to do something that most people can. Being blind is often considering one of the most crippling disabilities a person can possibly have.

Our eyesight is important, to be sure, as it allows us to see the world around us in great detail. Without our eyes, everything would be dark and featureless. We would have nothing but our ears to rely on as we tried to navigate through the world, interacting with things we couldn't even see. So of course it's important to Protect Your Eyesight, because it's one of the most useful senses we have.

Still, the unfortunate truth is that sometimes accidents happen and people lose their sight. Other times, people are born into this world already unable to see. They've never known what it's like to be able to take things in with one's eyes.

Many people take that to mean that if you're blind, there's little left for you to do. They think you'll forever be reduced to stumbling about aimlessly, and that you'll always need constant help and supervision. They can't fathom the idea of a blind person being able to fend for himself or herself, or teach themselves how to lead normal lives as if they didn't have a disability in the first place.

But this is an error in judgment. Throughout the history of the world, there have been all sorts of people such as Stevie Wonder who managed to get along just fine without their sight. It was difficult for most of them, because there's no denying the vitality of the role our eyes play. However, just because it isn't easy doesn't make it impossible. There are stories of people overcoming their blindness in a variety of unique ways, such as Louis Braille creating a reading system specifically for the blind, and James Holman developing a technique for human echolocation.

They all managed to live their lives out to the fullest even in the absence of what the rest of us might see as a fundamental, irreplaceable function. Thomas Pryor Gore did it like so many others.
